Exploring 70s Music

The 1970s was a decade of great change and transformation – both musically and socially. The decade saw the birth of punk and disco, while classics from the likes of Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and Queen continued to dominate the airwaves. This was also the decade that saw the birth of some of the most iconic and influential artists of all time, including David Bowie, Michael Jackson and Madonna.

So, what were the defining moments of popular music in the 1970s? Here are just a few:

The release of Led Zeppelin IV:
Led Zeppelin’s fourth album, often referred to simply as ‘Led Zeppelin IV’, was released in 1971 to critical and commercial acclaim. The album featured some of the band’s most popular and enduring tracks, including ‘Stairway to Heaven’, ‘Black Dog’ and ‘Rock and Roll’.

The rise of disco:
The early 1970s saw the rise of disco, a genre that would go on to dominate the latter half of the decade. The 1973 song ‘Love Train’ by The O’Jays is often cited as the first disco hit, while the 1974 film ‘The Sugarland Express’ featured the now-iconic disco track ‘Ain’t No Stoppin’ Us Now’.

The birth of punk:
Punk rock exploded onto the music scene in the mid-1970s, with the release of the Ramones’ self-titled debut album in 1976. Punk was a raw and primal form of music that was in stark contrast to the polished and often formulaic sound of disco. Punk would go on to have a major influence on the music of the 1980s and beyond.

The rise of Michael Jackson:
Michael Jackson’s 1979 album ‘Off the Wall’ was a game-changer for both the artist and the music industry. The album featured a new sound for Jackson, as well as a new level of danceability that would come to define his career. ‘Off the Wall’ was a massive commercial and critical success, and it cemented Jackson’s place as one of the biggest stars in the world.
